Introduction to Modernism

  1. I have heard a rumor that an unacceptable number of students at our institution do not read; therefore, they do not think deeply. I find this to be somewhat disturbing and, I hope, inaccurate. With this in mind, I am going to challenge the members of this group with the following three texts:
    Introduction to Modernism
    Introduction to Postmodernism
    Hypermodern Times

The first two are fairly accessible texts that will give you a grounding in the subject. At least enough to begin a conversation and ask question.
The third text is more dense and complex in its thesis and development of its point.

All three are essential to understanding our cultural environment. As potentially practicing artists and designers, I hope I do not have to explain why that is important.

This will mean a commitment from the readers. If I arrive and no one has attempted the reading, the above rumor will seem to be true. I will simply leave, as I have many other obligations upon which to spend my time. If you have all read the texts, then I think we can examine this critical issues and perhaps help you function within your professions from a basis of understanding that goes beyond the surface.

If you are interested and committed, you can download the texts from me at this Wednesdays meeting, or stop by my office and get them from there. They are a little to heavy to e-mail

  2. Change of tack. I think we will have January 2010 as Modernism Month, February will be Postmodernism Month, and March will be Hypermodern Times.

The topics need more time to do them justice...
